Artistic imagination stretched to the human limit
Deng Shiqing blends old masters with new faces in her latest exhibition
Deng Shiqing manages to blend old masters with new faces in her exhibition Stretched in Los Angeles.
The Chinese artist focuses on the “various states” of women in a claustrophobic environment. At times it resembles a lockdown.
“In this series, Shiqing presents women in contemplation. Painted over lockdown, her characters exude an air of resignation. Does it matter what lies beyond her fantastical interiors?,” arts magazine FAD stated in a review.
“Canvases merge a contemporary, almost digitized sensibility, with a meticulous old-master, [but then] there is already so much to see inside. Modeled after her friends, her women are regal and central, as they sit and stretch and go about their quotidian routines,” FAD said.
Deng Shiqing’s Stretched exhibition runs until August 28 at the Simchowitz Gallery in Los Angeles. Click here for the full details.
